Patch and writing by Hannah
“‘Like mushrooms after a rain, organized pockets of women are springing up in union, in shantytowns, and in neighborhoods all over the country…’”[1]
And all over Latin America, and all around the world. I dedicate this patch to the thousands of organizations in the world fighting for women’s rights, however the concept may be defined. I have chosen on this patch to specifically honor some Latin American women’s groups with which I am familiar for various reasons. Space, time, and knowledge have limited the scope of the list, but I believe these 24 organized groups of women can give us an idea of what exists.
Countries represented on this patch include Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and more (some organizations serve multiple countries by providing information or organizing international conferences).
Issues include truth and justice for families of the disappeared, reproductive rights, literacy, health, education, gay and lesbian rights, AIDS prevention, poverty, war, workers’ rights, community building, and more.
Many of these organizations have websites. Go to my Links page for more info.
